A tyre with a tread depth of 3mm will generally stop half as fast again as a new tyre. However, in many cases a tyre with a tread depth of 1.6mm will take nearly twice as long to stop on a wet road as a new tyre with full tread depth. Exact differences in stopping distance will vary based on a range of factors (type of tyre, type of vehicle, road conditions, etc.). Tread depth and stopping distance have an inverse relationship: the shallower the tread, the longer it will take for a vehicle to stop. The relationship between tyre tread and stopping distance 1.6mm: the shallowest tread depth legally permitted in the UK and the depth at which tyres urgently need to be replaced.3mm: the tread depth that most tyre professionals consider the threshold for replacing tyres, since traction and stopping power are substantially reduced below this depth.4.8mm: the lowest tread depth still considered “good” by most tyre experts.8mm: the most common tread depth of a new tyre.Tread depth by the numbersĪ few key numbers to keep in mind when checking tread depth are: In snowy conditions, adequate tread depth is even more important. This is especially true if you habitually drive in wet, slushy or muddy conditions. Studies also show that traction and stopping power drop significantly from a tyre with 3mm of tread to one with 1.6mm and most experts agree that it is best to begin looking to replace tyres when they fall below the larger of the two depths. One of the main functions of the grooves in tyres is to push water or slush out from under it, or to bite into snow-packed roads, and shallow grooves do not do this job nearly as well as deeper ones. However, the actual amount of tread needed to safely drive and stop a vehicle in different conditions may exceed this technical minimum. Likewise, European standards require tyres to be manufactured with a visual indicator allowing drivers to know when the tread has worn down to 1.6mm or less. In the UK, the minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm across the centre three quarters of the tyre footprint. Note the depth and repeat the process at various points on the tyre, taking the smallest reading as the definitive one. This shaft usually displays the measurements in both 32nds of an inch and millimetres. The shaft with the measurement markings will slide upward as you push the “foot” down and show you the depth of the tread. Then push down the “foot” of the gauge until it firmly rests on two elevated ribs of the tread on either side of the groove. To use the gauge, fully extend the rod and insert it into one of the grooves. The graduated probe has a thin, retractable rod, a perpendicular “foot” and a cylinder with measurements marked on it. The most common model of this tool is a graduated probe, which can be found at car parts stores. If your tyre has worn down until flush with any of the tread wear indicator bars, it’s time to replace it, even if the tread is still higher than the indicator bars elsewhere on the tyre.Īnother way to check your tread depth is to use a tyre tread depth gauge. The height of the bars is set at 1.6mm above the lowest point of the groove, which is the legal depth at which a tyre must be replaced in the UK. “Tread wear indicator” bars normally have an indicator on the sidewall of the tyre, for example the abbreviation “TWI” or a similar indicating symbol would be stamped in the sidewall in-line with the bars for easy reference. These bars are chunks of rubber that span the longitudinal grooves in the tread usually at every 60 degrees around the circumference of the tyre. Maybe the easiest way to check tread depth is to examine the tread wear indicator bars. You should use the smallest measurement as the basis for your decisions about replacing tyres. Whichever method you use, you need to check the tread depth at various points around the tyre’s circumference. The most common of several methods for taking this measurement are: checking tread wear indicator bars, using the “penny” test or measuring with a tyre tread depth gauge.

Three Ways of Working (Well, 5 actually!) Having said that, the old version was a pretty unique way of working, and had its advantages too, so it’s a pity to see it go. It is actually easier to use once you get used to it, but there will be that initial learning curve of looking for adjustments and trying to figure out where they went. I’ll be honest, the new interface took a bit of getting used to, but having used the beta for a while, its now hard to go back and use the old versions. Also gone is the ability to use screen modes on individual Tools, but you can still mask tools on an individual basis. If you want multiple versions of a Tool you’ll need to add it to a new layer. The downside of this new layout is that you can no longer use multiple versions of an adjustment on the same layer. When you use a Tool its name is highlighted in the interface to show you which tools are active and which haven’t been used. The tools themselves are redesigned and usually have a set of basic controls, and then some additional options hidden under an “advanced settings” button. There are also tools for things like cropping and rotation, lens corrections and the erase tool. This is similar to tool tabs in other applications. The new “Tools” are grouped into categories and these are accessed by a series of icons down the side of the interface. However, there are still occasions when it slows down, although I should point out that I have been using a beta version. In reality, this seems to work well, and I have found a definite speed improvement when working with images. The company stated that this allows processing to be speeded up significantly, as it allows rendering to take place in a specific order that is optimised for processing. The result is a unified set of tools that will always be the same and so there is no longer a need for workspaces. Some filters from the previous versions have been combined into a single tool and some have had their names changed and so on. All of the available tools are already there on the interface, broken down into categories. Filters are no longer even called filters and are now referred to as “Tools”. You no longer have a filter list and you no can longer manually add filters. This has all completely changed in Luminar 4. You could also save combinations as a “workspace” allowing you to customise the view and defaults. You could have multiple versions of a filter, and you could add as many as you want. In older versions of Luminar, you started off with an empty slate and then added “filters” from the list of available adjustments to create your own combination of adjustments. This isn’t just cosmetic and goes to the heart of the way the software works. While there has been a lot of discussion about the new AI features of Luminar 4, and we’ll get to those shortly, the biggest feature by far is the re-design of the interface. So with that in mind, here are my impressions of Luminar 4, its new feature and what it is like to use. Lots of people including myself have already shared details on some of the new features, the new interface and so on, so what’s left to review? Well, I wanted to wait until the software was actually released to put all the disparate threads together and talk about the application as a whole. Luminar 4 was pre-announced a while ago now, and the company has been drip feeding information about it to the public. It’s weird writing a review of something that a lot of people have been talking about for quite some time now. Soda ash is the commercial name given to sodium carbonate, a product that occurs naturally in alkali lakes like Lake Natron, and Since 2006, there have been plans to build a soda-ash extracting facility on the lake. But on Lake Natron, which is a Ramsar site - a measure that recognizes ecologically valuable wetland habitats - the lesser flamingos face another potential threat. Little water leaves them high and dry, and vulnerable to opportunistic predators that will venture in. Too much rainfall into the lake will flood their nests too The birds are somewhat delicate breeders: by building their nests at the lake’s center, they depend on a perfect balance of water to keep them safe. These larger areas work like “satellite sites” that offer a kind of refuge that is increasingly sought after - especially for the lesser flamingo, described as ‘near-threatened’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. What you should do is work on finding a kick beat that allows you to keep a decent pace that you can sustain for the event you are doing that does not compromise the rest of your race. No triathlete has ever won their event being the first person out of the swim and then being the middle of the pack for the bike and run. On the other hand, triathletes do not need to have an incredibly fast kick to win the race. This is proven repeatedly in competitive swimming where elite swimmers are often the fastest kickers. In general, the faster your legs go, the faster your arms will go. Although legs are not the main component of propulsion in swimming, they play a vital role in keeping your body in synch with your arms and providing a tempo. It’s time to start conditioning your legs to work. Flippers or short fins force you to put your body in the correct position for your legs because of their mechanics you’ll find quickly that you’ll go nowhere with bent legs, stiff feet and a wide stance.Īlright, so you’ve got a good feel for the kicking technique because you are balanced and you’ve minimized drag. Wearing flippers during kick sets, especially at the beginning, is a great way to improve technique and help with ankle flexibility. The wider the legs are from the body, the more drag they create and the more likely they are to sink and not move in synchronization with the upper part of the body. The legs should also be close together to be as streamlined as possible. Ideally, a good freestyle kick is one where the legs are straight (the swimmer is kicking from the hips with very little bend in the knee) but the ankles are flexible. This does not mean that your whole leg should be flexible. Increasing flexibility in your ankles allows your feet to act like flippers and gain more propulsion in the water. In freestyle swimming, having flexible ankles can be a key part of your kick mobility. Keep in mind you want to make small kicks so that your legs don’t sink and create more drag, but your kicks should be enough to move you forward. When trying to maintain equilibrium between your head and feet keep your legs close together and kick from the hip. Therefore, kicking can be an essential component in maintaining body balance and stability. People with low body fat or an uneven body fat distribution generally have a harder time floating and keeping their legs up towards the surface of the water. Kicking is very closely intertwined with body balance. Practice getting your body to balance by spending some time doing various drills such as the back balance, side balance and six-kick drills. If your feet are sinking, you are creating extra drag and making it more difficult for your body to propel forward in the water. The first step in swimming correctly is ensuring you have a good body balance, which means your head is even with your feet. By using proper technique and conditioning your swimmer’s legs, you can make your triathlon race faster and more pleasant. If you’re kicking incorrectly, you can exhaust yourself and make it harder for yourself during the rest of the race. Why, then, don’t they work when you’re in the pool? Here is the deal with the swim kick: if you kick correctly, you can make yourself faster and conserve energy. Yours are probably rock solid from all that running and biking you’re doing.
